LCC adds tennis to sports camp line-up

Summer is far from over at the Laredo Community College Athletics Department, which has added a tennis clinic to its sports camp line-up.

Tennis Clinic
Youth and teens can learn or sharpen their skills on the tennis court by signing up now for a four-day Tennis Clinic for ages 8 to 15 that will be led by Jaime Donjuan, head coach of the nationally acclaimed LCC Palomino mens and womens tennis teams.
Participants will meet Monday through Thursday, July 26-29, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the H.E. Butt Tennis Courts, located on the north side of the LCC Fort McIntosh Campus.

The clinic fee is $65 per participant.
The clinic, open to boys and girls, will be tailored to meet the needs of each participant, said Donjuan, who was named Men’s Tennis Coach of the Year by the National Junior College Athletic Association in May.
“Laredo Community College is pleased to offer this clinic, which will focus on the fundamentals of tennis, including the forehand, backhand and serve,” Donjuan said.
Donjuan will be assisted by LCC assistant coach Henry Estrella and members of the Palomino tennis teams.
Developing endurance on the court will be a major part of the learning experience the LCC tennis clinic will offer.
“A serious tennis player is trained to play well under all types of weather conditions.  This clinic will allow participants to become conditioned to handle all types of challenges on the court,” Donjuan said.
He added that the participants should wear protective gear, such as a cap or visor and sunglasses.  They also should bring sunscreen lotion and bottled water.  Participants also must bring their own racquets.

Volleyball Camp

Young and experienced volleyball players can improve their skills on the court by participating in the LCC Summer Volleyball Camp July 19-22 at the Maravillo Gymnasium.
Binny Canales, coach of the LCC Palomino volleyball team, is directing two camp sessions.
A four-day camp for ages 5 to 12 meets from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., while an advanced camp for ages 13 to 18 meets from 1 to 5 p.m.  The camp fee is $78, which includes a T-shirt if registered by July 8.
Enrollment for the Tennis Clinic and Volleyball Camps is at the LCC Athletics office, located in the Maravillo Gymnasium, room 152. For more information, call 721-5326.
