Let’s Talk Fishin!
James Bendele

It’s been a long time since Falcon Lake has had a better chance at getting above 291, or ten feet from full. Last summer we got up to about 10.5 feet from conservation pool, and held it till the spring irrigation season. And at the end of 2004 we got up to about 292, or around nine feet from full.

But there is a real chance that we could get the lake up above either of those levels, if the water masters handle this excess properly. Amistad is full to conservation pool, and as I write this it is going slightly over pool. According to what we’ve heard, there are no plans to keep Amistad above pool level. And if they are smart, Amistad should probably be dropped a few feet in case of any other events that cause the Rio Grande to go on the rampage. These lakes were built for flood control, after all.

But greed does get in the way when it comes to water, and both the Mexican and American authorities have been guilty in the past of poorly managing the water levels on these lakes. I know that the folks at Amistad should have had more of this water already in Falcon before this event occurred.

And of course I am talking about the flooding in the Rio Conchos Basin in Northern Mexico, where most all of the lakes were held at over or near capacity going into the hurricane season.

I know that water will not run uphill, and that once you turn it loose you can’t get it back, but there needs to be some better preparations made in the future. It is sad to see a lot of people displaced and property damaged because of poor water positioning. Much of the water in Mexico should have been in Amistad, and much of the water in Amistad should have been in Falcon.

But we are glad to see the water here at Falcon, no matter how it got here.
I’m getting off the soapbox and getting back to the intent of this column. To talk about fishing. And Boy Howdy, the fishing has been great.

We’re still in a springtime pattern  on Falcon, and fish are moving up with the rising water. A lot of days you just cannot fish too shallow.

Spinner baits are still catching the majority of fish, but chatter baits and top water frogs are also working well in the early morning and evenings.
There is always a flipping bite a little later in the day, and we are targeting mostly larger dead Huisache tree bases with our offerings. A baby brush hog, or a worm or lizard, will often times get you bit. Lighter colors are best in the clear waters, and darker baits will perform better in water that is stained.

The best areas have been off the main creek channels, in oxbows and pockets with clear water. Open water areas in some locations with rocky ridges are holding some groups of fish, but they can be very spot specific. If you find a pod of fish in this new open water, mark it well. These fish are grouping up in an area as big as your truck bed, and if you are off the mark, you won’t catch them.

If you have any questions or need anything related to fishing Falcon, or any other lake for that matter, just give us a call. We have the latest in equipment and supplies for any fishing application. And plenty of it.

And you can visit us anytime, at FalconLakeTackle.com.

Check out our Flash Fishing Report to keep up with what is going on around the lake and on the water.

We look forward to seeing you!
